You come in tired, just wanting a place to land. Door opens, quick check-in, a friendly enough face—and for a second you think you’re set. Then the room starts talking back. The bed doesn’t let you sink in, the pillow fights your neck, and suddenly rest feels negotiable. Bathroom’s off—hair where it shouldn’t be, water pooling at your feet because the drain won’t keep up. You adapt, like you do on the Camino, but it’s not the good kind. Wi-Fi is a ghost. You chase it through networks and passwords, end up downstairs in a small lobby with two chairs, like everyone else who gave up trying. There’s a rhythm to these places—doors opening, people moving—but here, if reception steps out and locks up, you wait. Outside, in between. And the stairs—low ceiling, no warning. You learn fast or you hit it. It’s central, sure. Bars, food, life right outside. But inside, it misses the point.
