Trekking Poles on Planes.

Possibly this has been mentioned already but whats the rulling on carrying poles on planes. Carrying my rucksack and gear on board a Ryanair plane in May. Looks like I will have to leave my poles behind looking at their website. Any words of wisdom? Many thanks.

It's a difficult questions. Until now in Spain airports was not possible to carry trekking poles inside the plane. (https://www.aena.es/es/pasajeros/equipajes-controles/equipaje-mano/que-esta-prohibido.html). However a pilgrim commented on this website that now if it is possible (https://www.gronze.com/foros/camino-portugues/bastones-en-avion). Last month I flew from Malaga to Santiago and two people carried the trekking poles on the plane, so maybe it is possible. However, the best option is to ask at your airport security control in advance to be sure.

At Santiago airport, you can check in your trekking poles with Ryanair (and other companies) for free. It is a special agreement of this airport with the airlines.

The international rule is no trekking poles are allowed through security and it has nothing to do with the airlines as they are controlled by these international aviation rules. Your best bet is to not carry them or to check them. Having said that, I took my poles on multiple trips but mine are the type you can fold in three and fit them inside the backpack and pass security until one of my last trips from Madrid back to the US that I wasn't allowed to do so. After that, no more poles for me and the truth is that I don't need them for the Caminos so I just don't take them and I pick a stick on the road.
